The Legend of Qilin
The Qilin (pronounced: chhi-lin, Chinese: ÷è÷ë; pinyin: q¨ªl¨ªn) is a legendary mystical creature. Qilin has unique form: the body of a deer with a multicolored coat and a yellow belly, a horn on its forehead, hooves of a horse, and the tail of an ox.
As a symbol of great virtue, Qilins are said to appear only in places reigned by a benevolent ruler, usually seen at the birth or death of an emperor or of a wise one. This peaceful and gentle creature can walk on water and walk on grass without squashing it. Since Qilins are kind in nature, they eat no meat and make an effort to prevent themselves from stepping on any living creature. Qilins may look intimidating; however they are only harmful to those who are sinful or those threatening the pure-hearted. To have a Qilin appear is a heavenly omen that brings rui (Chinese: Èð; pinyin: ru¨¬) meaning "fortunate".
